I’m thrilled to offer a sneak peek at my new book, Burnt Toast Makes You Sing Good: A Memoir of Food & Love from an American Midwest Family (Viking/Penguin). The book has just gone on sale and this is one of the few places you’ll be able to get an excerpt. In this first chapter, my Irish and Swedish parents from Michigan travel across the U.S. to go work in my uncle’s Italian restaurant in San Francisco’s Mission District. Just click the link below or the image of the book.

I just started reading “Burnt Toast” this morning and I couldn’t put it down. Well, I had to because I had to go to work. As a born and raised, and now former, Michigander; it spoke to me on many levels. The morels, the lumber camps, the snow. Sigh.

Hello and here’s my gush for “Burnt Toast”! I too grew up in the UP-Stepehson and yes it is very cold. I live in WI now but love your books. Your reflection on your family story is so similar to mine! My grandfather is Swedish and my other Grandpa worked in lumbar camps. No matter how you slice it those times were hard. One of my grandmother’s recalls a Spring with only onions and potatoes to eat. We have come a long way. I am the oldest of 8 and have canned for years. My mother had 3 acres of garden, of course we canned. We too, smelted-yuck-and fished and ate venison. Life was not so much about healthy choices-no boxed food for us and I do believe we did eat better. I love to cook and my husband is a chef by trade. Thank you for sharing your journey and family with us! Love it! Delicous memoir!
