2019 EVENTS
I believe that book events should be fun. As a former stand-up and improv comedian, you just never know quite what to expect when I show up to a bookstore. (See the clip above for a reading from The Sharper Your Knife tour at the old Elliott Bay Book Co. in Seattle.) No two events are ever exactly the same. So if I’m coming to your area, I hope that you’ll be able to join me. There will be music (I may even sing), plus food and drink, door prizes and even balloon animals. Descriptions that are in the third person are from the hosting group. I’m quirky, but not crazy enough to refer to myself in third person.
Hungry for Words: Introduction to Food Writing
Weekend course, dates TBD
Anyone can write about a meal, but truly great food writing informs, entertains, and inspires. We’ll take a holistic approach to the art and craft of modern food writing, understanding what makes great food writers endure, trying different genres, generating ideas, assembling nonfiction book proposals, discussing culinary travel writing, and addressing the complexities of recipe writing. Writing exercises will be incorporated. This class is designed for aspiring and working food writers, bloggers, and seasoned culinary professionals who want to examine the way they approach their craft. Sign up via the Hugo House site.

Tecate, Mexico
I’ll be the visiting guest chef at this special resort about 90 miles from San Diego. Rancho La Puerta has been named the No. 1 Destination Spa by Conde Nast Traveler for the past several years. It is an all-inclusive resort that includes morning hikes, exercise classes, evening lectures and much more, all with a focus on wellness and healthy living. You also get three squares of excellent, healthy cuisine by chef Denise Roa. My guest chef duties include teaching three cooking classes during the week. Classes are limited to 16 students. Private cooking classes can also be arranged for groups. Bonus! If you’re a first-time visitor, you can get up to a $250 discount when I refer you via the Ranch Circle Program. Visit Rancho La Puerta’s web site for details, and email if for info on how to get your discount.
